Storia dello Sliding Centre di Cortina d’Ampezzo: da inizi 900 al 2026.
Lo Sliding Centre ‘Eugenio Monti’ di Cortina d’Ampezzo ospiterà le gare di bob, slittino e skeleton in vista dei Giochi Milano Cortina 2026. La pista, costruita negli anni ’20 del 1900, è stata teatro di prestigiose attività sportive, ed è oggi oggetto di riqualificazione con un investimento complessivo di 118.424.000,00 €.Tale riqualificazione è suddivisa in tre fasi: rimozione di parti obsolete (già conclusa, con una parte conservata a fini museali); costruzione della nuova pista di 1.730 metri che segue parzialmente il tracciato storico con 16 curve e inserimento dell’opera nel paesaggio con materiali e tecniche sostenibili per un’area totale di 7 ettari; realizzazione di un memoriale che racconti la storia degli sport di scivolamento legati al territorio locale. Il 31 gennaio 2024 è stato aggiudicato l’appalto lavori a Impresa Pizzarotti, con l’inizio delle attività in cantiere il 19 febbraio 2024. Dal 24 al 30 marzo 2025 è prevista la pre-omologazione della pista. Il completamento è previsto il 5 novembre 2025 con la successiva omologazione e consegna a Fondazione Milano Cortina 2026 per lo svolgimento dei Giochi.
History of the Sliding Center in Cortina d’Ampezzo: from the beginning of the 20th century to 2026.
Cortina d’Ampezzo’s ‘Eugenio Monti’ Sliding Centre will host bobsleigh, skeleton and luge competitions in preparation for Milano Cortina 2026. Built in the 1920s, the slope has hosted the scene of prestigious sports activities and is now undergoing redevelopment with a total investment of €118,424,000.00. The redevelopment is divided into three phases: the removal of obsolete parts (already completed, with some part preserved for museum purposes); the construction of the new 1,730-meter track that partially follows the original track with 16 curves and landscape using sustainable materials and processes covering a total area of 7 hectares; and construction of a memorial telling the story of sliding sports related to the local area. On January 31, 2024, the works contract was awarded to Impresa Pizzarotti, with on-site activities on February 19, 2024. Pre-homologation of the track is scheduled from March 24 to March 30, 2025. Completion is scheduled for November 5, 2025 with subsequent homologation and handover to Fondazione Milano Cortina 2026. Before hosting the Games, the track will be used for training by both International Federations as well as for an IBSF World Cup event in November 2025.
Eugenio Monti: lo spirito sportivo che avvolge la pista
Eugenio Monti, nel 1954 vinse il primo titolo italiano con un nuovo modello di bob prodotto proprio a Cortina, dove, nel 1956 – sulla pista che poi gli sarà dedicata – conquistò due medaglie d’argento nel bob a due e a quattro. Il suo nome è legato a una delle più belle ed esemplari storie di sport. Ai Giochi del 1964, prestò un bullone che si era rotto alla squadra inglese che poi vinse l’oro davanti agli italiani. Ciò gli valse la medaglia Pierre de Coubertin, riconoscimento attribuito agli atleti che dimostrano uno spirito di sportività nei Giochi olimpici. Monti, alle successive Olimpiadi di Grenoble 1968, vinse l’oro olimpico nel bob a due e a quattro.
Eugenio Monti: the sporting spirit of this historic track
In 1954, Eugenio Monti won the first Italian title with a new model of bobsleigh produced in Cortina, where, in 1956 – on the track that would later be dedicated to him – he won two silver medals in the two and four-man bobsleigh. His name is linked to one of the most beautiful and exemplary stories in sports. At the 1964 Games, he lent a bolt to the British team – they later won gold ahead of the Italians. This act earned him the Pierre de Coubertin Medal, an award given to athletes who demonstrate exceptional sportsmanship at the Olympic Games. Monti, at the next Olympic Games in Grenoble 1968, won Olympic gold in the two-man and four-man bobsleigh events.

- On-site amenities, easily accessible, set in a unique natural setting. The entire track will be covered by a green-roofed structure; the buildings will be made with a typical pitched roof in line with local Ampezzo architecture with the entire area planted with greenery with pathways made of Dolomite gravel.
La prima pista a glicole al mondo per competizioni sportive
La pista, progettata per minimizzare l’impatto ambientale, incorpora un avanzato sistema di refrigerazione, consegnato lo scorso febbraio 2025, con ampiezza frigorifera di 3.150kW e utilizzo di soluzioni ecocompatibili. Si tratta di una opera sostenibile per la prima volta al mondo per competizioni sportive con il liquido di distribuzione del freddo a glicole al posto ammoniaca. Con questa tecnologia è stato ridotto l’uso del 96% dell’ammoniaca, che rimane confinata solamente all’interno dei compressori in sala macchine per garantire la produzione del freddo. La sua potenza complessiva è di 4,4 megawatt che garantiscono la produzione del ghiaccio lungo tutta la pista. Il fluido vettore – per la prima volta in Europa e per la prima volta al mondo per competizioni sportive – è il glicole che viene raffreddato nella centrale frigorifera e pompato poi lungo tutto il circuito. Lungo le curve e i rettilinei ci sono delle tubazioni in acciaio che fungono da parte strutturale della pista e trasportano il fluido fino a raffreddare il cemento producendo il ghiaccio su tutte le pareti dello Sliding Centre.
The first glycol track in the world for sports competitions
The track, designed to minimize environmental impact, incorporates an advanced refrigeration system delivered last February 2025, with a cooling capacity of 3,150kW and using environmentally friendly solutions. This is the world’s first sustainable project for sports competitions using glycol along the track. instead of ammonia. With this technology, the use of 96% ammonia has been reduced, which remains confined only inside the compressors in the engine room to ensure cold production. The system’s total output is 4.4 megawatts, which ensures ice production along the entire track. The carrier fluid-for the first time in Europe and for the first time in the world for sports competitions-is glycol, which is cooled in the refrigeration plant and then pumped all along the track. Along the curves and straights are steel pipes that act as a structural part of the track and carry the fluid up to cool the concrete producing ice on all the walls of the Sliding Centre.
Il cantiere: le persone che hanno realizzato il sogno
Da febbraio 2024 a marzo 2025 sono circa 135 le persone che per oltre 300 giorni hanno permesso la realizzazione dell’opera. L’impresa capofila Pizzarotti ha stretto accordi con 35 appaltatori – ditte principalmente bellunesi e nazionali – e con 115 fornitori di materiale. La direzione lavori è affidata a ITS. A supervisionare l’opera è il Commissario nominato dal Governo italiano, Arch. Fabio Massimo Saldini che è anche Amministratore Delegato della Società Infrastrutture Milano Cortina 2026 (www.simico.it), partecipata pubblica al 100% che secondo la legge olimpica dell’ 8 maggio 2020, n. 31, ha come scopo statutario, la realizzazione, quale centrale di committenza e stazione appaltante, anche stipulando convezioni con altre amministrazioni aggiudicatrici, delle opere individuate dal Decreto del Presidente del Consiglio dei Ministri.
The construction site: the people who made the dream come true
From February 2024 to March 2025, approximately 135 people over 300 days enabled the construction work. The lead contractor Pizzarotti has made agreements with 35 contractors – firms mainly from Belluno and Italy – and 115 material suppliers. Construction management is entrusted to ITS. Overseeing the work is the Commissioner appointed by the Italian government, Arch. Fabio Massimo Saldini, who is also CEO of the Società Infrastrutture Milano Cortina 2026 (www.simico.it), a 100 percent public shareholding company that, according to the Olympic Law of May 8, 2020, No. 31, has as its statutory purpose, the realization, as central purchasing and contracting station, also by entering into agreements with other contracting authorities, of the works identified by the Prime Minister’sDecree.
La ghiacciatura: modellazione artigianale
La ghiacciatura è la fase con la quale, abbassando gradualmente la temperatura a -21° in centrale e fino a -15/-18° lungo la pista, il glicole comincia a ghiacciare l’acqua che viene sprizzata sulla superficie. Questa attività unita alla modellazione artigianale da parte dei ghiacciatori permetterà al ghiaccio di formarsi con uno spessore di circa 4 cm lungo tutta la pista.
Icing: handcrafted modeling
The icing phase is achieved by gradually lowering the temperature to -21° at the power plant and down to -15/-18° along the track. The glycol begins to freeze the water that is sprayed on the surface. This activity combined with artisanal shaping by the ice makers will allow the ice to form with a thickness of about 4 cm along the entire runway.
La pre-omologazione: i test in pista
La pre-omologazione, fissata dal 24 al 30 marzo 2025, è il test richiesto dalle Federazioni internazionali per verificare che tutte le misure di sicurezza ed i parametri sportivi siano stati rispettati e messi in atto. Essa consisterà in una serie di discese per le varie discipline che cominciano così a prendere confidenza dalle diverse partenze scenderanno lungo tutta la pista.
Pre-homologation, set from March 24 to 29, 2025, is the test required by International Federations to verify that all safety measures and sports parameters have been met and put in place. It will consist of a series of descents for the various disciplines, testing the different sections along the entire track.

Sono 12 le nazioni partecipanti:Austria (AUT), Canada (CAN), China (CHN), Great Britain (GBR), Germany (GER), Italy (ITA), South Korea (KOR), Latvia (LAT), Romania (ROM), Switzerland (SUI), Slovakia (SVK), and the United States (USA).Il numero totale degli atleti è di 60, così ripartiti:
– Slittino: 11 atleti internazionali e 7 atleti italiani.
– Bob:17 atleti internazionali e 17 atleti italiani.
– Skeleton: 4 atleti internazionali e 4 atleti italiani.
In totale, tra atleti, allenatori e allenatori aggiuntivi dell’IBSF, partecipano 134 persone (8 allenatori internazionali per bob e skeleton; 10 allenatori internazionali per lo slittino;10 allenatori in rappresentanza della squadra italiana; 6 rappresentanti dell’IBSF e 6 della FIL; 34 allenatori IBSF aggiuntivi (osservatori) dai seguenti paesi: Australia (AUS), Austria (AUT), Belgio (BEL), Brasile (BRA), Croazia (CRO), Repubblica Ceca (CZE), Danimarca (DEN), Francia (FRA), Gran Bretagna (GBR), Germania (GER), Giamaica (JAM), Corea del Sud (KOR), Lettonia (LAT), Liechtenstein (LIE), Monaco (MON), Paesi Bassi (NED), Polonia (POL), Romania (ROU), Svizzera (SUI), Slovacchia (SVK), Ucraina (UKR) e Stati Uniti (USA).
The athletes who will test the track
We have athletes from 12 nations participating: Austria (AUT), Canada (CAN), China (CHN), Great Britain (GBR), Germany (GER), Italy (ITA), South Korea (KOR), Latvia (LAT), Romania (ROM), Switzerland (SUI), Slovakia (SVK), and the United States (USA).
The total number of athletes is 60, broken down as follows:
– Luge: 11 international athletes and 7 Italian athletes.
– Bobsleigh:17 international athletes and 17 Italian athletes.
– Skeleton:4 international athletes and 6 Italian athletes.
In total, including athletes, coaches and additional coaches from the IBSF, there are 134 people participating:
